Spotify's New QR Code Check for Family Plans: How It Works and How to Avoid Losing Premium

Spotify is the latest streaming service to crack down on account sharing. Some Premium Family members are now being asked to prove they live with the plan manager by scanning a QR code — in person. Miss the deadline and you'll drop to the free, ad-supported tier and be locked out of other family plans for a year.

Here's exactly how the new check works and what to do if you get the prompt.

The rule isn't new — the enforcement is

Spotify's Premium Family plan has always been meant for up to six people who live at the same address. Until now, enforcement mostly relied on members typing in their home address when they joined, or when the manager moved. That was easy to get around.

The QR code check is much harder to fake. Spotify's co-CEO described it on the company's Q3 2026 earnings call as a "routine improvement" to verification for a plan that now makes up a large share of its subscribers.

How QR verification works

When Spotify asks you to verify, you'll get a notification. Then:

1. The plan manager opens the Spotify mobile app, taps their profile picture, then Your Premium, then Manage to display a QR code.

2. The family member scans that code with their own phone's camera.

3. Both people must be in the same place. The code refreshes every few seconds, so a screenshot sent over chat won't work.

Verification only works in the mobile app, so both of you should update Spotify to the latest version first.

The deadlines and penalties

• You have 7 days after the notification to complete the scan.

• If you miss it or the check fails, you're moved to Spotify Free (with ads).

• You can rejoin the same Family or Duo plan, but you can't join any other Family or Duo plan for 12 months.

• You can still subscribe to an individual Premium plan at any time — the 12-month restriction doesn't apply there.

Troubleshooting a failed scan

If the scan won't work:

• Update the Spotify app on both phones.

• Check that the date and time are set correctly on both devices — mismatched clocks can break time-based codes.

• Close and reopen the app, then try again.

• Make sure you're scanning in person; the code is designed to expire too quickly to share remotely.

Does Spotify track my location?

Spotify says it doesn't track your location for address checks and only uses the address you submit to verify. The QR approach instead relies on both phones being physically together at the moment of the scan.

What if your family doesn't live together?

This is where it gets tricky. Students living away from home, adult children who've moved out, or relatives in different cities technically don't qualify under Spotify's terms. Your realistic options:

• Duo plan for two people at the same address.

• Student discount if you're eligible — often cheaper than a share of a family plan.

• Individual Premium for anyone living elsewhere.

Some people report workarounds, like showing the code over a live video call. That breaks the rules, and Spotify can remove you from the plan and apply the 12-month block if it's detected — so it's not worth the risk for a few dollars a month.

The takeaway

If you live with the plan manager, the new check takes ten seconds: update the app, stand in the same room, and scan. If you don't, it's time to compare individual, Duo and student plans before the 7-day clock runs out — losing access to family plans for a whole year is the real cost of ignoring the prompt.
