iPhone Duo Inner Screen Cracking: What Owners Should Do (and What Buyers Should Know)

Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, reached customers on October 25, 2026. Within days, some owners were posting photos of the inner screen cracked along the fold, or showing bright lines and stuck pixels. Apple has now confirmed there's a problem. Here's what we know, what to do if it happens to you, and how to think about buying one.

What's going wrong

The reports describe a consistent pattern: cracks on the lower half of the inner display, running along the centre of the hinge, sometimes after only a handful of opens. Several owners say they felt a slight bump under the screen or heard a popping sound just before the damage appeared. Others see bright lines or pixel faults rather than a visible crack.

Not every post online is genuine — some fake, AI-generated "crack" images have circulated — but enough real cases were verified that Apple responded publicly.

What Apple has said

Apple told several outlets it is aware of an issue affecting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units, and that affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple later added that most units aren't susceptible and that affected devices tend to show the fault fairly quickly after use. It hasn't given a failure rate or confirmed a cause.

Repair specialists have offered theories. iFixit's teardown and hinge modelling pointed to a possible stress point near the centre support, and a separate teardown found a broken middle hinge link on one cracked unit. Dust or debris entering the hinge has also been suggested. None of these is confirmed.

If your iPhone Duo is affected

1. Stop folding it repeatedly. Continued use can worsen the damage.

2. Document it. Take clear photos of the screen and note when it started and whether you heard or felt anything unusual.

3. Contact AppleCare or visit an Apple Store. Apple has directed affected owners to AppleCare for a replacement. Reports indicate AppleCare+ isn't required for this specific issue, and the replacement falls under the phone's standard warranty.

4. Don't pay for an out-of-warranty repair without asking. An inner-screen repair outside warranty is listed at $999 in the US, so make sure staff log it as the known display issue rather than accidental damage.

5. Remove cases and screen protectors before your appointment. Apple's guidance asks owners to check for particles along the hinge and dents on the frame, and third-party accessories can complicate the assessment.

Should you still buy one?

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, so this is a big purchase. A few sensible precautions:

• Buy where returns are easy. In many countries you get a 14-day return window from Apple. Where that doesn't apply, a replacement is still likely now that the issue is acknowledged — but check local terms.

• Test it in the first days. Since affected units seem to fail early, open and close it normally and watch closely during the return window.

• Consider waiting a few weeks. Early production runs of new designs often have teething problems. Reports suggest Apple relaxed some inspection standards to boost holiday supply, though Apple hasn't confirmed this.

• Think about AppleCare+. It won't be needed for this defect, but foldable screens are expensive to fix if something else goes wrong.

The bigger picture

Every major foldable has had a rough patch at launch — Samsung's first Galaxy Fold famously had its release delayed over screen failures. A fault affecting a small share of units isn't unusual for a brand-new hinge design. What matters is how quickly Apple identifies the cause and whether later batches are fixed. Until then, buy from a retailer with a generous return policy and keep an eye on that crease.
